  • Support trainers in setting up appropriate assistive equipment workshops.
  • Raise awareness among stakeholders and policy makers about early identification, referral and intervention.

Our Vision

To Provide for Orphaned Children and youths with Physical and Neurodevelopmental (ND)-related disabilities to enable them achieve their potential and be a valued part of their community.

Why We Exist

A large number of children with physical and neurodevelopmental disability (NDD) born in Nigeria, and their parents/caregivers, are struggling to come to terms with the challenges of managing life (often from birth to adulthood).

While the needs of children with NDD and their parents are enormous and well documented, the tragedy is that Nigeria resources (human- and material) for appropriate services/interventions to these children and their parents are scarce. In practice it means that there is a serious shortage of:

  • competent rehabilitation professionals and field workers
  • appropriate assistive technology
  • Vocational training for youths with physical disabilities

Unemployment rates among persons with disabilities are almost double that of the general population, owing to attitudinal, mobility-related, technological, and physical barriers (lack of accessible workplaces). Assistive devices are expensive and not easily available, which limits the mobility and access to technology for persons with disabilities. In addition, many will experience frequent denial of job opportunities, employers’ negatives attitudes, inappropriate job placement, lower expectations at work, and a lack of reasonable accommodation.

Our Approach

 RECDOT’s purpose is

  1. Provide a care and education for the most disadvantaged children and youths in physical and NDD
  2. To provide best practices on rehabilitation for children with physical and NDD
  3. To provide training programs for fieldworkers to improve skills on identification and functional rehabilitation, including appropriate assistive devices, for children with NDD and their families.

Training is always connected with concrete and practical implementation in the field, with the focus on participation of the child with physical and NDD in family life and community. Monitoring evidence is part of the planning process.

What We Do

  1. Facilitate Community Based Rehabilitation/ Community Based Inclusive Development (CBR/ CBID) strategy; support initiatives to promote parent associations; support initiatives to make appropriate assistive devices.
  2. Capacitate Master-Trainers to implement acquired expertise and become practical ToT’s and coaches on functional rehabilitation for parents/caregivers, focusing on Quality of Life and coping, both for caregivers and for their child living with NDD.
  3. Provide feeding, shelter and health for disadvantaged children and youths, especially those orphaned and/or neglected by their families.
